Kevin Campbell was the first black player in the history of the Turkish Club, Trabzonspor. All the Turkish clubs are the same, they all have riddiculus transfer plans. Campbell was one of them. He was a good player in his early ages, however he became an unsuccesful one. He was transferred to Trabzonspor in 1998, at the age of 28. He had managed to score 3 goals and make 2 assists in the 5-3 victory against the rival club Galatasaray in his first game with Trabzonspor and became a hero of the fans. However things didn't go well with him and he couldn't score any goals in 8 consecutive games. In Turkey, people who interested in football, mostly interest in daily successes. They don't give managers or the footballers enough time to prove themselves. You have to show the success which is expected in the given time. If you don't, you pay for it. In my opinion that's why Turkish clubs will be never winning the Champions League. Because Turkish people are impatient. They don't go into the problems and try to solve them in football. They just hire a new and good manager, and transfer some good players (usually foreign players and this is a big problem in Turkey because clubs don't improve infrastructure, in order to reach the success in easy ways and quickly) and they think they can have success. At that time, the president of Trabzonspor was Mehmet Ali Yılmaz and after another game of Kevin Campbell without scoring, he made and historical statement. " We bought this discoloured cannibal as a goal machine, but he turned out to be a washine machine. " After this incident, Kevin Campbell made a press conference and leave the club. That was a historical incident in Turkey. Also that showed how the mentality of Turkish clubs work, and how the people are succesful to blame someone else in everytime. Considering these I have the idea that, the mentality of the managing the clubs in Turkey should be changed. They spend too much money for foreign players, and usually they become unsuccesful in Turkey. The most effective reason for that is, their transfer plans are riddiculus. Second reason is even though they buy a good one, a quick success is expected from the players. They can breed a lot young Turkish players with the money they spend fot hiss unnecessary transfers and create a high quality of Turkish players in Turkey. That's how Turkish clubs will be succesful. They cannot have this success with money, because they can never compete with Chelsea, Real Madrid, Liverpool, Barcelona or Manchester United's finances. They have to breed new Turkish players. That's how Galatasaray won the Uefa Cup or Porto won the Champions League. The had just three foreign players in their first 11. That shows how infrastructure was significant for them and their transfer plans are good. They just bought the players that they think good and fit the team. That brings the succeess. I hope this mentaliy is going to be changed in Turkey and we won't be witnesses of an incident like this in the future.
This is a great post. Very persuasive and full of examples.
